Chapter Twelve

Molly looked from her mother to Tormod and then to Gregor, unsure of what to say. Was Tormod correct? Would they be making a huge mistake if they went to Edinburgh?

Gwyneth placed her hands on her daughter’s shoulders. “Molly, I want you to go back and look at the etchings again. You are the only one who can judge them properly. I cannot see it, Tormod cannot read, and Gregor is not the best at his letters, though I’d like him to take another look. Was Jennet trying to tell us to go in a different direction, and if so, which way?”

Molly’s stomach somersaulted at least five times before she could force herself to walk over to the tree to take another look.

Gregor eventually joined her, peering over her shoulder. “I do not see what you see. I say Edinburgh.”

Her mother said. “Molly, if you strongly believe that Tormod is correct, please say so.”

The decision was hers—and hers alone.

“Take your time. ‘Tis more important that you are correct than that you do it fast.” Tormod’s blue eyes burned into hers. He believed in her, though she did not understand why when her mother stood not far from her. Did he not know her mother was the best spy and archer—best female, really—in all the land?

Molly did her best to focus on the task at hand. True, it could be an N indicating north, but it could also be part of a W… Or it could be nothing at all. What if the mark had not been made by Jennet at all? What if it had been made by Brigid, imitating her cousin? Brigid did not know her letters as well as Jennet did. She rubbed her forehead, wishing she could make a decision.

The reality was she could not. She did not trust her own judgment enough. They needed to find her father, see what he thought, see where they should go next. Her sire could eliminate the doubt in her mind. He made his decisions quickly, without hesitation, something she could not do.

She stood and faced her mother, her hands behind her back. “Mama, I cannot be sure. I think it may be an N, but it is quite crooked. Mayhap we should go see Da, see what he thinks…”

“Molly.” Tormod’s voice was thick with exasperation. “Trust your instincts. You have good judgment. Take another look and tell us what you think. Do not be afraid to make a decision.”

“Aye, just tell us what you see, and we’ll go that way.” The pain in her mother’s face broke her heart. She considered her options again, but came up with the same answer.

She could not do it. Her mother or father had always made the decisions. She just could not be sure what Jennet had intended.

Her shoulders slumped and she whispered, “I cannot tell for sure. I say we go to Edinburgh.”

Tormod shook his head and she turned away, not wanting to see his disappointment. He did not understand the reasoning behind her decision.
